Basingstoke 5 v Petersfield 2

Saturday saw the Petersfield 2nd XI ladies meet in the glorious sunshine of Basingstoke. With a full squad and 2 subs we were feeling optimistic. The opposition however were on fighting form and Basingstoke were on the attack from the start. The defensive line up of Jones, Sands, Keech and Day with Wilson in goal were put to work straight away. Basingstoke were able to close down many 16-yard hits which made getting the ball up the field quite challenging.
An early opportunity from Petersfield on the Basingstoke goal didn’t quite go in and the Basingstoke attack came back with a vengeance. By half time we were 3-0 down and feeling slightly out of sync. A few words at half time and with a new resolve, Petersfield ladies returned to the pitch. The second half was much more even with equal possession and determination on both sides. The weather was getting warmer and the opposition were getting tired. Petersfield’s big break came in the last 15 minutes with a great pass up to Pruden on the right wing, a storming run and a cracking cross to Simmonds in the D who scored. Within 5 minutes the same winning scenario happened again with Pruden and Simmonds scoring another goal. We were all ready to do the same again but sadly we ran out of time. The final score was 4-2 to Basingstoke, a good match despite the score.
