Goals Galour for the Mens 1st as they thrash Southampton Uni 10-0

Petersfield started the second half of the season with a new captaincy set up and the aim to secure their second league title in two years with their restart against Southampton University.

Petersfield started the game with an overload of attack, pinning Southampton back into their half and not letting them out. Petersfield created triangles around each player to maintain a fast pace whilst in full control which caught Southampton out on many occasion. Petersfield took advantage in there clinical display after the squad created 3 goals within the first 10 minutes with Grinstead, Edwards and Atkinson all hitting the backboard. Despite the 3-0 lead Petersfield did not hold up and continued to dominate the game. Southampton did gain a handful of counter attacks which were broken down with immediate action from the defence of Edney, Alder & Crawford. Before the half time whistle Grinstead scored again from a drag flick penalty corner routine along with Macey picking up the rebound from the keeper caused by Grinstead’s initial flick and then flicking the ball over the line to take a 5-0 lead into the half time break.

Petersfield raced straight back into the game after refreshing the energy levels from the break. Horton was awarded a penalty flick after being taken down by the goal keeper by a solitary effort past 3 defenders. Captain Grinstead stepped up to take the penalty flick and secured his hatrick with a firm push to the bottom left corner. Southampton had an attacking moment as the striker sprinted past Petersfield defence and slipped the ball past goal keeper Ross. Defender Crawford got behind all the players and dived across the goal to clear the ball. With the near goal nearly taking Petersfield current clean sheet out of reach they stepped up the passing and saw simple pass and move tactics tire Southampton which caused further mistakes allowing Atkinson room to score an additional 2 goals to reach his hatrick. Bott came close to score the first of his season yet was denied by the post. Pin point passing down the right hand side including Edney, Grinstead, Atkinson, Cains and Edwards created two chances where it would have been harder to miss the goals which were both scored by Edwards to conclude the fixture at 10-0 to Petersfield.

Petersfield face 3rd place Fareham away in their next fixture of the season. Petersfield won the first meeting 4-0 and will be looking to take 3 points for the second time along with keeping the title hopes alive.
