Hockey clubs from around the area send their strongest teams to compete at the John Wright Tournament organised by Havant Hockey Club. The only tournament where you can win medals! The Petersfield team had one thing on their minds as they went into battle at this tournament, to come home with a medal around their necks – but what colour would it be?
This year the teams competing included: Petersfield, Havant, City of Portsmouth, Fareham, Chichester, Reading and Southampton based Trojans. An exceptional Petersfield side played 7 games, winning 6 and drawing 1.
With precision and finesse Petersfield ambushed their opposition with attack after attack, the impressive formation of Hulme, Mckenzie, Stanbridge and Rushin secured a total of 18 glorious goals in total. The strong midfield play came from Eames, Faithfull and Pruden, positioning themselves well to drive the ball up the field to the attacking players. Some of the best play came from Petersfield’s defence who guarded their territory like a pride of lions, Hegan, Liddle and Gardner kept a clean sheet through the first 5 games and only conceded 1 goal to Trojans who Petersfield went on to beat 4-1. The impressive display from the Petersfield defence earned Hegan the Petersfield Club Captains, “Player of the Tournament”.
The score sheet:
Chichester 1-0 WIN
City of Portsmouth 1-0 WIN
Havant A 1-0 WIN
Fareham 4-0 WIN
Reading 0-0 DRAW
Trojans 4-1 WIN
Havant B 7-0 WIN
.
These amazing players provided a morning of very exciting and at times nail biting hockey, they went on to win the tournament and claim the gold medal with the silver going to City of Portsmouth and bronze to Chichester.
Ian Pruden, Mini’s Lead Coach said “I am so proud of this U8 squad, all our minis have worked hard in training and enjoyed playing at the tournaments over this season. To come here and take home the Gold medal is just the icing on the cake for what has been a truly remarkable hockey season”.
