U8s clean up at Haslemere

The Petersfield U8 squad got their first experience of tournament hockey on Sunday and it proved to be a resounding success thoroughly enjoyed by all. For many of the team, having only picked up a hockey stick for the first time a few weeks ago this was a chance to put some of their new skills to the test within a team environment. They grew into the tournament and steadily improved game by game. Coolly marshalled at the back by a combination of George Sands, Cody Callard-Williams and Alexandra Temple the defensive team mopped up any pressure that came their way impressively conceding just the one goal in five matches.

A very competitive midfield of Beatrice Porter, Harry Cleife and George Shanks were quick to close down any threatening breaks from the opposition and with at times some slick interplay and strong running provided a spring board for numerous successful attacks. The finishing touches were provided by Thomas Crabtree and Islay with moments of flair from Tom Shanks.

Overall it was satisfying to see the young players begin to understand their roles within a team and with a score sheet of played 5, won 4 and drawn 1 (10 goals for, 1 against) the future is bright for Petersfield Hockey Club and most importantly a fun morning at Haslemere Hockey Club was had by all.

Update:

Haslemere Hockey Club U8/U10 Festival, 28th October
We have great pleasure in welcoming you all to our tournaments on Sunday!
To help with orientation we have put the following guide together:
Location of Tournaments
Both tournaments will take place at Woolmer Hill Sports Ground, Woolmer Hill, Haslemere, Surrey GU27 1QA. Large scale map on provided on email.
Clubhouse and Pitches
Please note that the Hockey Club pavilion is located behind pitch 1 and shared with the Haslemere Rugby Club. This should not be confused for The Edge Leisure Centre which is located next to the car park and in front of pitch 1.
Pitch 1 will host the u8 tournament and is located just behind the Edge leisure centre. Easily identifiable as this is the green pitch.
Pitch 2 will host the u10 tournament and is located adjacent to the Edge car park (just across a small access road). Easily identifiable as this is our brand new blue pitch!
Please can I ask you to remind all spectators and players to clean their shoes/boots on entering this pitch (and to avoid walking on the mud/grass). This pitch is 2 days old and it is essential we maintain its condition.
Car Parking
There is car parking at the Edge Leisure Centre and an overflow car park located before you turn into the Edge. There is also further car parking located at the pavilion. We will have some volunteers in Hi-Vis helping point the way.
Refreshments
Hot drinks and bacon rolls etc. will be on sale in the pavilion. The Edge also has a range of vending machines.
Timings
09.30 – Earliest time of entry
10.00 – First matches will start
Please note we will have a prompt start as there are matches in the afternoon after the tournaments.
All children playing are to wear shin pads and gum shields. Umpires have been instructed not to allow children without a gum shield to participate in any game.

UPDATE: Note for U8 Managers - we have one boy, that plays for us, who has Cystic Fibrosis, naturally we are keen for him to have the opportunity to play in the tournament. The only reason I mention this is to see if you are aware of any players in your u8 teams who also suffer from CF ? When 2 CF sufferers are in close proximity there is a risk of x infection between them both (note there is no risk to any other people). His parents understand that we cannot check every player or take responsibility but they have just asked if I could send a message to see if anyone is aware of another u8 player with the same condition. Please let me know if you are aware of anyone but don’t worry if not.

UPDATE FROM HASLEMERE: Good news - I have heard this evening that our 2nd pitch at Woolmer Hill Sports Ground will be ready for this Sunday’s tournament. Hence u8 & u10 tournaments will occur in the same location (WHSG).

Now that we have this information the coaches and squad managers can start building the detailed schedules. I will have these across as soon a s they are complete.

ARRIVE BY 9.30 am for 10am start.
