So the first question I would ask, is what is more important, preparation and organisation, or a bacon sandwich!, this was the statement I received as I casually walked across to meet the Under 10 Girls and the expectant group of Mums! (I was hungry!), Unfortunately our coach James, had been unexpectedly called away with work, and my name was next on the list to help out! Well luckily the girls were far more prepared than I was................................................................................
This was the first tournament the Petersfield Girls U10's had navigated without the constant annoyance of Boys! in the side, and it was clear from the first two games that a baptism of fire was being witnessed. Petersfield came up against two very good sides and the eventual winners and runners up on the day. First Haslemere. We lost 3 - 0, but I would like to add that these were all scored in the first half, so to place a positive spin on the game, we drew the second half. Next up was Winchester, again we lost 4-0, but again these were all in the first half. With all girls playing really well, we always seemed to work better after we had warmed up.
The Third game was a local derby against Alton, we had shared the road space on our journey down to Brockenhurst, but that was were the line was drawn. Olivia in goal played a blinder, and Serena, Ellie and Ella were dogged in defending the goal. It was unfortunate, but a quick goal scored by Alton, when we switched off for the only time in the match was the difference between the two sides.
Our fourth game was a beauty, we faced Trojans, and it is fair to say that we dominated from the offset, Violet came closes to scoring, when her first shot was saved well by the keeper and the follow up went agonizingly wide. Emotions from all Parents and encouragement followed, Isabelle and Isabella (Known to us all as Izy and Izy! to help me out) were brilliant, and our only goal of the day was a peach. Olivia saved, Ella Cleared, Serena ran the length of the pitch, Passed to Violet who crossed to Millie who then finished with aplomb, queue mad celebrations from the bench...........1-0
With spirits high, we faced into our last game, against the Hosts New Forest. It was end to end and several chances from both teams amazed the expectant parents that no goals had been scored. Petersfield came away with a draw 0-0, but all were very grateful for Olivia who as her first stint in goal, saved 3 shots in a row to protect the scoreline.
We finished 5 overall, Behind New Forest on goal difference. What I think we can all take away from this, is that all the girls were amazing and worked really hard, also we began to look more and more like a team as the games totaled up, so everyone should look forward to the next tournament at Havant in a few weeks.
