Nail-Biting Win for U16Gs

The final league game of the season went down to the wire
DUe to the withdrawal of 2 teams from the South Central GU16 Tier 3 League, Sunday was Petersfield U16G's final league game of the season. Away against Alton it proved to be an exciting finale. The girls got off to a great start, without the usual stuttering first 5 minutes, passing the ball and keeping great momentum up the pitch.
Ten minutes into the first half Daisy Day scored what can only be described as a doggedly persistent goal, repeated firing balls at the keeper, creeping ever closer to the goal line before eventually getting the ball in the net. After a near miss 2 minutes earlier, Nicole Parker (we think!) scored goal number 2 and Petersfield were 2-0 up after 20 minutes.
Alton struck back on the 25th minute but just before half time Emily Thompson had a sweet reverse stick shot at goal to take the girls into a 3-1 lead at half time.
Clearly the Alton coach had given his team a great half time pep talk as they came out firing on all cylinders in the 2nd half and put some great player to player passing runs together, heaping pressure onto the Petersfield team. They scored 2 goals to bring the game level with probably only about 15 minutes of play remaining and Alton definitely had the run of play at this point. But the Petersfield girls kept their heads and dug in deep. Alice Stratton-Brown was glorious in defence and Tamsin Lowe and Jasmine Green worked wonderfully together to save multiple goal opportunities from Alton.
With about 10 minutes of play remaining (the manager's timing was all forgotten by then!) Georgie Stratton-Brown ran the ball from inside the Petersfield half, all the way up the pitch, into the Alton D and scored a fine goal to put Petersfield ahead once more. From then it was frantic defence from Petersfield as Alton tried desperately to claw their way back and quite frankly the whistle couldn't come soon enough for the Petersfield parents whose nerves were in shreds on the sideline.
Although our competitive season has ended, there are still a few more matches to be played in the League to determine final standings but the Club couldn't be more proud of how the team have developed and pulled together. Well done to the girls for their amazing play this season!
