Singing in the Rain

This week the team welcomed R. Jones to the senior squad. With the rain clouds pouring down like a sprinkler watering the flowers, Petersfield took to the field of play ready to take on local rivals West Meon.

Petersfield started without a keeper and soon had a short corner against them, luckily Payne arrived in the nick of time and the short corner was successfully defended. The first half witnessed Petersfield struggle to keep their shape, West Meon took advantage and attacked the D, after four saves by Payne West Meon managed to score 1-0. As the heavy rain persisted West Meon managed to score again taking the score to 2-0 at half time.

With the monsoon conditions relentless, the second half commenced. Petersfield playing with more confidence, successfully moving the ball through the midfield via Preston, Silvester, and Simmonds. On several occasions Petersfield found themselves attacking into the D, but they could not find the back of the net. West Meon clung to their set pieces to get the ball back into their half, but the Petersfield defenders Amesbury, Day, Llewellyn, and J. Jones kept them back. As Petersfield’s frustration to get a goal continued Simmonds received a green card for lifting her stick and left the pitch for 2 minutes. Finally, an attacking drive by Silvester was rewarded with a goal from Choularton 2-1. Head, Pruden and R. Jones continued to work hard in the midfield and with seconds to spare Petersfield won a short corner, the umpire decision that Head had gone too soon, sent Choularton back to the halfway line. The short was taken but the ball hit a Petersfield foot, the whistle was blown to finish the game 2-1.

Petersfield left the pitch soaked to the skin but with some very positive play to take to the next game.
