Petersfield 2’s Youngsters Show Huge Character Against a Strong Vets Side

This turned out to be a classic game of two halves. Raining from the start, Petersfield were immediately under pressure with an early shot from Salisbury hitting the post after only 3 minutes. Petersfield retaliated and went close themselves with one of their own attempts coming off the post. After 17 minutes the Salisbury pressure paid off after a save by Broadmeadow was followed up by a second shot putting Salisbury 0-1 up. From the restart Petersfield immediately went on the attack and narrowly failed to equalise but it was Salisbury who 3 minutes later were to double their lead with a breakaway goal (0-2).

Despite some good link up play on the left and a narrowly missed shot from a short corner Petersfield fell further behind after 27 minutes when a short corner was converted at the other end by Salisbury. Half time 0-3.

The Petersfield team returned for the second half with a slightly changed formation. After 10 minutes of fairly even play it was Petersfield who started to come out on top with some good work through the middle resulting in an excellent save from the Salisbury keeper being followed up well and put into the Salisbury net by Plewes (1-3). Six minutes later, with Salisbury down to 10 men following a green card, Petersfield were awarded two short corners within a minute and a well-worked second goal from McDermott (2-3).

Salisbury rallied and 5 minutes later restored a two goal lead after a short corner was converted (2-4). Petersfield were not done yet and continued to press the Salisbury defence and were awarded a string of short corners all going close or deflected. With the minutes ticking down Petersfield were finally rewarded with a third goal from King from another well worked short corner (3-4). Petersfield pressed hard for the equalising goal but were thwarted by the final whistle.
