Having already won the league with two matches in hand, 14 points clear of their nearest rival and a goal difference of 65, Petersfield’s rescheduled match against the Yateley Flames was a chance to add the icing on the cake.

Having already won the league with two matches in hand, 14 points clear of their nearest rival and a goal difference of 65, Petersfield’s rescheduled match against the Yateley Flames was a chance to add the icing on the cake. Yateley on the other hand had a point to prove and desperately wanted to avenge their drubbing from earlier in the season.

Yateley opened the match with intensity testing Petersfield’s defence and drawing some solid keeping from White. Petersfield hadn’t quite found their usual rhythm but kept their cool and at the first opportunity for a counter attack whipped the ball wide for Kent to accelerate around the left flank of the retreating Yateley defence and deftly slot the ball past the keeper.

Yateley mounted the pressure again from the restart, only to see Petersfield’s defence again turned quickly into another swift counter attack, with Cooke-Priest junior and senior linking to put a second past Yateley. Not vintage, but they all count.

Yateley, now frustrated to have gained nothing from their high tempo efforts, suddenly found them selves 2-0 down at half time against the team who have dominated the league this season.

Petersfield settled more quickly into the second half, playing their more controlling game and it wasn’t long for Plewes to add Petersfield’s third from a clinical set piece short corner.

Yateley weren’t going down without a fight and looking for a conciliation score, finally managed to convert from a short corner to jubilant celebration. A score against Petersfield is a feat many teams haven’t come close to this season.

Petersfield still had a final flourish up their sleeve; a full stretch diving strike from Kent to wrap the match up at 4-1 was the icing on the cake and a fitting score line to round off a spectacular unbeaten season.
