On a warm sunny afternoon Petersfield 3s made it to the Bedales pitch for a game against Haselmere. Spirts were high given that our first win of the season was against Haselmere.
Warming up in the heat of the sun the team were prepared to do what was needed to move the ball around the pitch and score goals. Most importantly a strategy was in place to avoid conceding goals. Starting the game Petersfield moved the ball well and managed to keep possession, with a lot of that the ball remaining in the Haselemere half. Constant pressing and holding onto the ball were rewarded early on with the team finding the back of the net. First blood to Petersfield.
A committed and well trained Haselmere team came back at Petersfield. After they found their feet and some confidence returned to the sides strikers. Our CDMs and midfield put in a great shift, with a lot of running. Notable movers and shakers were Olly Davey and Thomas Law. Alfie and Wilred further up the field spent their energy wisely and were good to move the ball efficiently. This supported our strikers like Henry to be able to get the ball onto the back board. Despite our efforts the first half ended 2-1 to Haselmere, due to some errors in the back line.
Half time gave the team some opportunity to take much needed fluids on board and re group tactically. With a renewed optimising and guidance from James Longland about tightening up a the back the team started strongly and soon found the ball in the opposition D. A strong and calculated move by Herny Mashall, supported by Olly Morley (who made several looping attacking moves) and some strategic positioning of Nathan the Petersfield team had space to move the ball around and through the defensive line of Haselmere.
With a renewed focus on defending at our end, headed up by David Longland and Robert Budden any shooting opportunities were closed down by James in goal. Our keeper also made two excellent kicks of the ball to the sideline, avoiding short corners (which were well defended), and subdued the appetite of Haselmere to strike the ball with enough force to get past his keeper pads. An outstanding performance from all players - particularly those who scored and spent 70 minutes running and talking.
Another win for Petersfield.
